For this post, we went through 138 of those diagnostics from international students who applied to reach universities — NYU Abu Dhabi, Yale, Brown, Northwestern, Amherst, Notre Dame, Duke Kunshan, and many others, most of them with 3–10% acceptance rates. The same five patterns kept appearing. This is what we found, why it matters, and why even high-achieving students keep falling into these traps.

The data in one paragraph
The 138 rejected applications came from students in nearly 40 countries and targeted highly selective US universities — a mix of Ivy League schools, elite research universities, and top liberal arts colleges, almost all with acceptance rates below 15%. When we drilled into the specific issues cited inside all 138 reports, five patterns accounted for most of what actually went wrong: missing test scores, generic "why us" supplements, scattered narratives, unverifiable achievements, and one-dimensional profiles at schools that prize range.
Reason 1: No SAT or ACT score (and assuming test-optional is neutral)
Mentioned in 115 of 138 reports — 83%.
This was by far the most common problem. Students submitted applications without a standardized test score, trusting that "test-optional" meant "test-neutral." It doesn't — not at a reach school.
At schools whose admitted pool scores 1510–1560 on the SAT, a test score is the only globally normed academic data point a reader has. Without it, a strong GPA from a local curriculum the reader isn't intimately familiar with "rests entirely on an unverified local scale," as one report put it. Readers don't know if a 98/100 at your school is genuinely elite or just solid. A 1500+ SAT would have told them. Nothing else can.
This hit STEM applicants especially hard. A strong Math subscore validates quantitative ability in a way an English-proficiency test can't, and several CS and engineering applicants were flagged specifically for leaving that signal unused.
Why students keep doing it: International students often live far from SAT test centers, pay significant fees to register, and sometimes travel across borders to sit the exam. Test-optional policies introduced post-COVID created a widespread belief that skipping the test is free. At a 4% acceptance rate, it isn't. The absence of a score is read as information, not as a blank.
Reason 2: A "why us" supplement that could have been sent to any school
Mentioned in 91 of 138 reports — 66%.
The second-most common problem is the generic supplement. Students were writing "why this school" essays that named no specific programs, no labs, no faculty, no courses, and no campus-specific features. In several cases the essay named the wrong unit of the university — a Northwestern applicant referenced Feinberg (the medical school) when she was applying to Weinberg (undergraduate arts and sciences). In other cases, the essay framed the school as filling a gap in the student's past rather than as the specific place their existing momentum accelerates — a subtle but important difference in how a reader perceives fit.
One diagnostic put it bluntly: a supplement that could be submitted word-for-word to any university signals that you didn't do the research, and admissions officers notice. When a student had obvious matches on campus — the Astroparticle Physics Lab for a student who built a CubeSat, oSTEM at Northwestern for a queer bio applicant — and failed to name a single one, the supplement became evidence against them rather than for them.
Why students keep doing it: Applicants to 10–20 schools face crushing supplement volume and end up reusing the same generic paragraphs about prestige, rigor, and community across every school — swapping only the name at the top. They also research the brand of the university (its ranking, its reputation) instead of the actual academic units where they'd study. Reach schools care about the second, not the first.
Reason 3: A scattered or incoherent narrative
Mentioned in 67 of 138 reports — 49%.
Roughly half of rejected students had the raw material for a strong application but never connected the pieces. The personal statement was about one thing, the activities list pointed in a different direction, and the supplement argued for a third identity. The reader couldn't leave the file with a one-sentence summary of who this person was.
Coherence here means connection, not narrowness. A student can have range — a biology researcher who also plays jazz and writes short fiction — as long as a reader can see how those pieces belong to the same person. The failure mode in the data is the opposite: a student's intended major said one thing, their activities showed a different center of gravity, and their personal statement wandered into a third emotional territory that never linked back to either. On paper, all three pieces were fine. Together, they didn't argue for a single person.
One example from the reports: a Princeton environmental engineering applicant whose ten activities included game development, medical video editing, an international relations conference, and a corporate communications role — none of which connected back to environmental research. Each activity was real. Together, they made it impossible for a reader to argue for the applicant as an environmental engineer. One diagnostic summed up the whole pattern directly: "identity and your science exist in separate paragraphs instead of a unified argument."
An admissions officer spends a few minutes per file. They need to finish with a thesis about the applicant. When the components don't add up, they leave without one — and an application without a thesis is nearly impossible to advocate for in committee.
Why students keep doing it: Applications get built in pieces, often months apart, often with different advisors giving contradictory advice. Students treat the Common App essay as a one-shot life story and supplements as academic pitches without realizing both should argue for the same person. The final pass — where you ask whether the personal statement, the activities, and the supplement point the same direction — rarely happens.
Reason 4: Achievements the admissions office can't verify
Mentioned in 32 of 138 reports — 23%.
The fourth pattern is quieter than the others but just as damaging: students listing achievements that an admissions reader has no way to verify or calibrate. A "National Science Olympiad finalist" with no link, no issuing body, and no mention of the selection pool. A "Letter of Appreciation at international level" with no named organization. A STEM competition that the diagnostic described as "ambiguously documented and cannot be assessed for selectivity." Training programs and cohort-based fellowships listed as if they were competitive awards, when a quick search would have told the reader they were open-enrollment.
The problem isn't that the activities are fake. In almost every case, the work is real. The problem is that the reader, sitting in an office in New Haven or Providence, has no way to tell a prestigious regional honor apart from a participation certificate — and the application gives them no help. When a file has no externally validated achievement in the student's stated field, one diagnostic put it, the rest of the profile has nothing to anchor to. Every profile needs at least one achievement a reader can look up and independently confirm — and a surprising number simply don't have one.
This compounds with Reason 1. If the reader can't verify your test score and can't verify any of your awards, the entire academic half of your file is a set of claims with no external backing.
Why students keep doing it: International students from countries without a tradition of Common App applications often don't know what "verifiable" means to a US admissions officer. They list the most impressive thing they did without realizing the reader needs a URL, a selection rate, an issuing body, or a third-party document. They also tend to over-list — putting every program they attended on the honors list instead of being surgical about what a reader can actually confirm. A shorter list of verifiable achievements beats a longer list of unverifiable ones every single time.
Reason 5: A one-dimensional profile at a school that wants range
Mentioned in 25 of 138 reports — 18%.
The fifth pattern shows up most at liberal arts colleges: the entire application shows the same thing, over and over. Every activity is CS and robotics. Every honor is a math competition. The profile is genuinely impressive, but it has one dimension — and at schools that explicitly prize breadth, that's a fit problem the student didn't realize they were walking into.
This is different from Reason 3. Reason 3 is about the pieces not connecting. Reason 5 is about the pieces all being the same kind. A student can have a perfectly coherent application that's entirely CS — and still miss at a liberal arts college, because the content is too narrow regardless of how well it hangs together.
The reports are blunt when it happens. A Bowdoin diagnostic: "The profile reads as almost entirely technical with no humanistic counterweight." At Oberlin, which "prizes students who cross disciplinary lines," the "complete absence of any humanistic intellectual engagement is a soft but noticeable misfit signal." At NYU Abu Dhabi, whose liberal arts model requires philosophy and literature alongside algorithms, the diagnostic noted "almost none" of that breadth in the application.
Why students keep doing it: The entire "find your spike" advice ecosystem is built for research universities, where a deep, singular focus is the ideal. Liberal arts colleges want a person with a center of gravity and evidence of curiosity beyond it. International students also often come from school systems that track students early into STEM or humanities streams, making breadth structurally harder — and when they apply to US liberal arts colleges without rebuilding any of it, the mismatch shows immediately.
What does all of this actually mean for you?
The most striking finding in our analysis isn't that these students were underqualified. They weren't — the overwhelming majority looked strong on paper but never gave the reader a reason to say yes at a single-digit acceptance rate. Their GPAs were good. Their activities were real. Their essays were competently written.
What separated them from students who got in wasn't talent. It was specific, fixable decisions — and the same five decisions kept coming up:
- Take the SAT or ACT if you possibly can. "Test-optional" is not test-neutral at a reach school.
- Name specific programs, labs, and faculty in your supplement. A supplement that could be sent to any school is evidence you didn't research this one.
- Make your application argue for one person — not one dimension. Range is fine; disconnection isn't. Your personal statement, activities, and supplement should all feel like the same person.
- Make every achievement verifiable. If a reader can't Google it, confirm the issuing body, or see a selection rate, it barely counts. A shorter list of verifiable wins beats a long list of unverifiable ones.
- Show intellectual life outside your main track — especially for liberal arts colleges. A profile that's every activity the same flavor reads as one-dimensional, no matter how strong the spike.
Every one of these is fixable before the next cycle. Every one of these is the difference between the version of your application that gets a thin envelope and the version that gets a thick one.
