Quick Introduction
Hello! I'm Xinyi, and I am pursuing my bachelor's degree in computer science at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) in the USA. I was born in China but grew up in Tokyo, Japan. I graduated from K. International School Tokyo, completing the International Baccalaureate (IB) program, as well as the IGCSE Program.

Why International?
During my application, I applied to and considered several countries including the UK, Singapore, Canada, Japan, and Hong Kong. I applied internationally because I wanted to experience something new outside of Japan.
My Application
I applied through the Common App, with a GPA of 3.89 and TOEFL 108. Since CMU is test-optional, I did not take the SAT. My extracurricular activities were mostly documented through the CAS System (Part of the DP Program). Within the school community, I was the treasurer of the student council and the founder and organizer of the secondary coding club. Externally, I participated in a city-wide broadcast talking about environmental protection, while also leading an environmental activist group. During the 2020 Summer Olympics hosted in Tokyo, I was also a volunteer.
Based on such experiences, I wrote my college essay about computer algorithms, string theory, and quantum computing. Throughout the essay, I connected the topics with a story about my violin performance. My school's University counselor was a major help with my essays, constantly providing feedback.
In total, I spent 2-3 weeks preparing essays and materials for the US Early Decision/Early Action Round.
Cambridge vs CMU
I was also accepted into Cambridge University in the UK. My UK Applications were paid for by my school, and I spent my summer break before Grade 12 writing UK personal essays and studying for the Cambridge Admissions test.
In the end, my ultimate choice was between Cambridge and CMU. I chose CMU mostly due to its atmosphere. Across all majors, students at CMU are ambitious, hard-working, motivating, and helping each other. While their programs are extremely challenging, they are significantly rewarding.

Why CMU for Computer Science?
Ranking 1st in eight specialty areas such as artificial intelligence, computer engineering, and cybersecurity among others, CMU is known as a prestigious school for STEM majors. Thus, at CMU, we can learn a lot of advanced computer technology before other universities teach it.
CMU's School of Computer Science is unique in that any CS Student can choose majors between AI, robotics, human-computer interaction, computational biology, and normal computer science major. These valuable opportunities make CMU the perfect for anyone looking to study in computer-related fields, offering a broad range of choices.

Student Life at CMU

During orientation week, there are numerous activities, such as kayaking, buffets, and even visiting the Google Office! Through such events, I have met many people who have become my friends. People at CMU have all been very friendly and supportive during my time there! I have also traveled to many places, such as New York, Boston, and California. Within the school community, I am part of the K-Pop and Sewing Clubs and the Japanese society.
Academically, the workload is pretty heavy, but can also be flexible. To maintain a good work-life balance, you must be efficient and good at organizing your tasks.

Post-Grad Plans
After graduating, I plan on working within the Tech Industry in the US for a few years. Specifically, I have an interest in quantum computing. Then, I want to return to Japan when I'm older.
