About the Program

The Research Scholars Program is the most selective tier of Non-trivial's fellowship pipeline, designed for high school students to lead original, impactful research. Scholars are selected from cohort Research Fellows and receive ongoing, custom mentorship from top academics, research and publication support, university and career guidance, and more. The program requires a minimum commitment of 10 hours per week on a flexible schedule. Approximately 10 Research Scholars are accepted each cycle; the top three projects receive $10,000 prizes, with all other Scholars receiving at least $2,000 scholarships. The 2026 fellowship pipeline progresses through Research Foundations (Mar 9 - Apr 5), Research Fellows (Jun 22 - Aug 17), and Research Scholars (starting Aug 18).

Eligibility

We’re not looking for any existing experience. Many successful fellows started with just their curiosity and a drive to make a difference. We look for applicants who demonstrate: Curiosity: The desire to understand how the world works. Critical thinking: The ability to think deeply and analytically about complex problems. Drive to make a difference: The motivation to solve important problems. Aged 14-20 Not in university

Eligible Countries

Worldwide🌎 Open to applicants from around the world, except for those currently located in a small number of restricted countries (e.g., China, Iran, Russia, and a few others due to legal constraints).

How to Apply

The application has been redesigned for the 2026 cycle. Applicants first apply to the Research Foundations program; Research Fellows are then selected from Foundations participants, and Research Scholars are selected from cohort Fellows. The initial application includes brainteasers and puzzles with sections on probability, game theory, and more. Select applicants will be invited to the semi-finalist stage where they will discuss their desire to make a difference (research ideas not required) and answer critical thinking questions.
