The Stanford Math Tournament (SMT) is an annual math competition organized and run by Stanford undergraduates through the Stanford Undergraduate Mathematics Organization (SUMO), with support from the Stanford Department of Mathematics. It offers two formats: an in-person tournament held each spring on Stanford's campus and an online tournament open globally.
The in-person event (held April 17–18 in 2026) is open to US-based high school students in teams of exactly 5–6 members, at a fee of $30 per student. Spots are allocated by lottery, with priority for top-performing teams from the prior year, low-income teams, and underrepresented groups.
The online tournament is open to middle and high school students worldwide at no cost, and takes place shortly after the in-person event each year. The 2027 competition dates have not yet been announced; check stanfordmathtournament.org in fall 2026.
