About the Program

The World Historian Student Essay Prize is an annual essay competition run by the World History Association (WHA), open to students in grades K–12 from any country. Students write an essay of approximately 1,000 words on a family story, personal cultural background, issue of personal relevance, or regional history, and discuss how it relates to them personally and to world history.

Submission notes:

Membership in the WHA is not required. Past winners may not compete in the same category again, and finalist essays are checked for AI-generated content. The WHA may publish submitted essays in the online World History Bulletin in consultation with the author.

Eligibility

Open to students enrolled in grades K–12, including public, private, parochial, and home-study programs. Open to students from any country. WHA membership is not required to enter. Essays should be approximately 1,000 words, double-spaced, in 12-point Times New Roman with 1-inch margins. Essays address a family story related to a historical event, a personal family cultural background, an issue of personal relevance, or a specific regional history, and discuss how it relates to the student personally and to world history.

How to Apply

Submit your essay through the WHA website at thewha.org. The 2027 deadline is announced by the WHA in September. Check the Prizes page for the current submission portal and guidelines.
