The ARTEFFECT Summer Art Competition is a free, juried visual arts competition for high school students worldwide, organized by the ARTEFFECTlmc Foundation — the visual arts initiative of the Lowell Milken Center for Unsung Heroes. Each year the competition centers on a theme; students create an original artwork celebrating an "Unsung Hero" whose innovation or courage made a lasting positive impact on others.
The theme approach:
Students begin by researching and selecting an approved Unsung Hero — a real person whose meaningful contributions to history or society have gone largely unrecognized. The 2026 theme is "Innovation Generation." The artwork and the 500–1,000 word Impact Statement must together tell the story of this hero's impact and the student's own creative journey.
What to submit:
- One original artwork in any 2D or 3D medium (painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, collage, mixed media, digital art, textiles, ceramics, and more); no size limit
- A 500–1,000 word Impact Statement reflecting on the Unsung Hero's contributions and the student's creative process
- Submissions are made through the Submittable platform; AI-generated work is not eligible

Award-winning works are exhibited at the ARTEFFECT Gallery at the Milken Center for Advancing the American Dream in Washington DC and the Lowell Milken Center Hall of Unsung Heroes in Fort Scott, Kansas.
Preparation:
The ARTEFFECTlmc Foundation offers an optional online Info Session each summer with guidance on hero selection and creating a compelling Impact Statement. All preparation resources, including approved Unsung Hero lists, are available free on the website.
