The Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC) is an annual problem-solving competition run by the Australian Maths Trust (AMT), open to students in Years 3–12 worldwide. It is Australia's longest-running, largest, and best-known school mathematics competition, and is available both in Australia and internationally.
Five established divisions (Years 3–12):
- Middle Primary (Years 3–4)
- Upper Primary (Years 5–6)
- Junior (Years 7–8)
- Intermediate (Years 9–10)
- Senior (Years 11–12)
Format: 30 questions (25 multiple-choice + 5 integer-answer); no penalty for incorrect answers; maximum 135 marks. Primary divisions: 60 minutes; secondary divisions: 75 minutes. Available online or as a printed paper.
Awards (in order): Participation → Proficiency → Credit → Distinction → High Distinction → Prize → Best in School → Cheryl Praeger Medal → AMC Medal → Peter O'Halloran Award (perfect score).
Fee: AUD $9.30 per student (bundle discounts available for schools entering multiple students).
2027 entry and contest dates: The official AMC page, checked November 4, 2026, lists August 3–5, 2027 as the contest window. Students take one timed sitting rather than attending continuously throughout that period. International printed entries close June 25; Australia/New Zealand printed entries July 2; online entries July 30. Printed answer-sheet returns are due August 6, with a late cutoff August 13. These school return dates are separate from entry deadlines.
The page announces Early Primary as a standard division from 2027, alongside the five established divisions. Its yearless October 12–23 pilot text describes Years 1–2, online, for Australia/New Zealand schools; those pilot dates and details are not assumed to be the 2027 calendar.
