Bebras is an annual international informatics and computational thinking challenge for primary and secondary school students, founded at the University of Vilnius, Lithuania in 2004. It is now run through a network of 80+ national member organizations worldwide, with over 2.5 million participants globally as of 2022.
Competition format:
Students take a 45-minute online multiple-choice test consisting of 15 problems divided into easy, medium, and hard difficulty tiers. Problems are designed to develop and assess computational thinking skills — no prior programming experience is required. Most countries use automatic web-based scoring.
How to participate:
Bebras is administered nationally — students register and compete through their country's Bebras organizer rather than through the international site. The competition is typically held in November each year. Visit bebras.org to find your country's organizer.
The UK edition, known as the UK Bebras Computational Thinking Challenge, is run by the Raspberry Pi Foundation in partnership with Oxford University. Fees and prize structures vary by country but participation is generally free or low-cost.
