About the Program

The Kenyon Review Young Writers Workshops are a suite of creative writing programs for high school students offered by The Kenyon Review, a literary journal published by Kenyon College. Three formats are available: a 6-week winter online workshop, a 1-week summer online workshop, and a 2-week summer residential program on the campus of Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio. All formats focus on developing students' craft in fiction, poetry, nonfiction, or other genres through workshops with experienced writers and editors. The residential program costs $2,575 all-inclusive (tuition, housing, meals); summer online is $995 and winter online is $695. Need-based financial aid is available for all formats, and the residential program is usually able to meet the full amount requested. International students are welcome, though aid does not cover travel costs.

Checked November 3, 2026: the official overview, winter page, summer online page, and residential page confirm the 2027 program dates. Winter applications are due December 10, 2026; the overview says October 26 opening while its dedicated page says early November. Residential applications are due March 1, 2027. No 2027 Summer Online deadline is confirmed; its FAQ retains April 13, 2026. The summer pages also contain conflicting age statements, disclosed above. The official tuition page supports the retained historical residential 2026 dates; other unverified historical dates are notes only.

Eligibility

Open to high school students worldwide. All formats require an online application, a 300-word personal statement, and a high school transcript; the residential program also requires a letter of recommendation. Acceptance is not affected by requesting financial aid. Summer formats list ages 16-18 and rising juniors, rising seniors, or recent graduates; rising sophomores are excluded. Those same pages also say current sophomores who turn 16 after the program may apply, contradicting the stated minimum age. Winter eligibility is current high school sophomores, juniors, or seniors and/or ages 16-18; it is not a universal 16-18 restriction across all formats.
