Global Appathon is a free virtual competition hosted by appinventor.org and MIT App Inventor. Entrants create mobile apps addressing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The 2026–27 homepage, checked November 4, 2026, confirms registration opened October 29, 2026, submissions open December 2 and all submissions are due April 2, 2027 at 23:59 AOE (Anywhere on Earth). Participants prepare their projects at their own pace before submission.
There are now three categories with one to five members: Junior, Youth and Adult. The homepage gives Youth ages 13–18 or current grades 7–12, while the FAQ still gives 13–17 in its winner-category list. Age 18 eligibility is therefore inconsistent across official pages. Category follows the oldest team member, based on age on April 2, 2027.
The registration/submission instructions require every team member to register before the same final cutoff; adults register under 13 entrants. Submit the app, a 2–3 minute demonstration video and an English presentation. Registration/submission forms must be English; other-language videos need English captions or subtitles. Each participant may submit only once and cannot join multiple teams.
Winners and honorable mentions receive award certificates and Summit invitations; the FAQ explains that successful submitters must also complete the later participation survey to receive a contribution certificate. Winners are expected at the end of May 2027 and the Summit date remains TBA. No later competition cycle was verified.
