About the Program

Battlecode is MIT’s AI programming competition, in which teams write autonomous players for a strategy game and compete against other bots. The published 2026 rules describe Java and Python support, worldwide scrimmages, Sprint Tournaments open to anyone and additional student-only tournament brackets. The High School Tournament requires every team member to be a high-school student. The US and International Qualifiers require college-student teams under their respective rules.

Battlecode 2026 is historical and officially ended January 31, 2026. The schedule places the final tournament on that day, so it is not presented as an application deadline. Each tournament has its own submission and eligibility requirements. The 2026 pages describe more than USD 20,000 in prizes; that amount is not established for 2027.

As checked November 4, 2026, the homepage mentions 2027 sponsorship but does not publish the new competition dates or submission cutoffs. Current 2027 fee and language terms are also not confirmed in these pages.

Eligibility

The published 2026 rules allow anyone to create a team and bot for scrimmages and Sprint Tournaments. Other tournaments require student eligibility. The High School Tournament requires an entirely high-school team. Teams must upload a bot, correctly declare eligibility and, outside Sprints, have every member upload a resume by that tournament’s submission deadline. Future 2027 rules and deadlines are not yet published.

How to Apply

The published entry route is play.battlecode.org, with tournament-specific bot submission and eligibility requirements. January 31, 2026 was the competition end and final tournament, not a verified universal application cutoff. The site mentions 2027 sponsorship but does not give a 2027 schedule or registration deadline. Java/Python support is explicitly described for 2026, not confirmed as a new cycle’s rules.
