Code in Place is Stanford’s free online introductory Python course, based on the first half of CS106A. Beginners worldwide learn through lectures, assignments and small-group sections with volunteer teachers. The syllabus includes Karel, variables, control flow, functions, graphics, lists and dictionaries. The official description asks learners to plan at least seven hours per week for six weeks.
The published course welcomes beginners from varied backgrounds. Content and sections are in English. The page describes certification and a shareable code portfolio hosted by Stanford. Its current terms, checked November 4, 2026, require age 13 or older for platform exploration and age 16 or older for applications to courses with section leaders. They exclude residents of North Korea, Syria and Crimea; this does not exclude all residents of Ukraine. These current terms do not establish a 2027 intake schedule or age reference date.
Checked November 4, 2026: the official homepage has differing timing labels. Its About section says April 2026, while the banner says classes started October 12 without specifying a year. The course-entry page requires an account/sign-in. No 2027 application opening, deadline or program schedule is published in the checked public sources. The old annual spring/April application assumption is not confirmed.
