About the Program

The Talaria Summer Institute (TSI) is a free six-week online research program that pairs high school students with scientist mentors to develop and complete original medical and scientific research projects. Talaria focuses specifically on students from gender groups historically underrepresented in STEM, including female, transgender, non-binary, and genderqueer students. The program has served 533 mentees from 28 countries, supported by 220 mentors.

Historical 2026 process:

  1. Application (January–March): Students submit applications through the online portal. Applications are reviewed by the Talaria committee in April.
  2. Matching (May): Selected applicants enter a matching stage where mentors review profiles and may conduct interviews. Final acceptance and mentor assignments are announced May 31.
  3. Pre-program (June): Accepted students complete any preliminary assignments or introductory meetings with their mentors.
  4. Summer Institute (July 1–August 12): Students work with their mentors over six weeks to conduct research, produce a literature review or study, and develop professional research skills.
  5. Talaria Conference (end of August): Students present their completed research at the annual Talaria Conference.

What students produce:

  • Original research projects in fields of their choosing (medical, biological, and scientific topics)
  • Professional literature reviews, research papers, or studies
  • A conference presentation shared with the broader Talaria community

Year-round programs: Beyond the Summer Institute, Talaria also hosts Talaria Clubs (academic-year research development and competition submission) and a Summer Residency program.

Historical closed 2026 key dates:

  • Application opens: January 1, 2026
  • Application deadline: March 30, 2026 (11:59 PM EST)
  • Matching stage notifications: May 1, 2026

Checked November 4, 2026: the application portal explicitly says 2026 applications are closed and will reopen in 2027. Exact 2027 dates are not announced. The dated schedule supports the historical dates above, including the provider’s exact EST wording. The generic How to Apply page instead describes December–April; it is not a dated next-cycle timetable. The portal also calls May 31 matching-stage notification, while the dated schedule gives May 1 for that stage and May 31 for final acceptance. The FAQ confirms international eligibility and English fluency for papers and mentor communication.

Eligibility

Talaria serves high-school students of historically marginalized genders, including female, transgender, non-binary and genderqueer students. International applicants are welcome; participants must be fluent in English and willing to write papers and communicate with mentors in English. Exact future-cycle application terms are not announced.

How to Apply

The portal explicitly closes the 2026 intake and says applications will reopen in 2027, without exact dates. The dated 2026 schedule opened January 1 and closed March 30 at 11:59 p.m. EST, with matching-stage notices May 1 and final decisions/mentor assignments May 31. The generic How to Apply page instead says December–April; it does not identify an exact 2027 window. A reminder signup is optional, not an application.
