About the Program

Take Action Lab is a semester-length gap year program offered by Tilting Futures, placing students for 16 weeks in either Cape Town, South Africa (Civic Innovation track) or Penang Island, Malaysia (Environment & Sustainability track). Students work alongside local practitioners through apprenticeships with partner organizations, supported by a research-backed curriculum and trained supervisors.

Before departing, all students complete an online Foundations Course. On-site, students receive private furnished housing, utilities, a debit card stipend covering groceries and transportation, and 24/7 support from a local team. Academic credit of up to 12 credits through the University of Pittsburgh is available for the Cape Town program.

Tilting Futures offers need-based financial aid, with a stated commitment to equity and diverse economic representation. Aid applications open during Step 2 of the admissions process. Tuition of $21,000 covers housing, curriculum, apprenticeship placement, a living stipend, and airport transfers; flights, passport, and vaccines are the student's responsibility.

Checked November 3, 2026 against the official program page and admissions schedule. August 2027 Take Action Lab runs August 9-December 3, with January 29 and April 2 deadlines. The February 2027 term retains February 1-May 25 program dates and crossed-out April 10/October 2, 2026 application milestones. The separate June 2027 Accelerator is a different, shorter program and is not added as a semester cohort here. The prior Fall 2026 dates could not be reverified on current pages.
