About the Scholarship

The Augsbury/North Country Scholarship has run at St. Lawrence University since 1974. It recognises academic and extracurricular leaders at a designated list of high schools in northern New York State and in Canada.

Named ANCS Scholars receive up to $50,000 for each of their four years, $200,000 in total. Nominees who are admitted without being named Scholars still receive at least $35,000 a year, $140,000 over four years, which makes a nomination worth pursuing on its own.

Two things gate it. Your high school has to be on the designated list, and your counsellor has to nominate you by 1 December of your senior year, the same date your application is due. The academic bar is a 90 unweighted cumulative average at the end of eleventh grade, or 80 for students at Canadian high schools, in a demanding curriculum. Keeping the award needs a 3.0 average at St. Lawrence.

Decisions usually go out around 15 December, so this is one of the earlier answers you will get in a U.S. application cycle.

Eligibility

Established in 1974 to recognise academic and extracurricular leadership among students at designated North Country and Canadian high schools. You must be nominated by your school counsellor, attend a designated high school, and have at least a 90 unweighted cumulative grade point average at the end of eleventh grade (80 for students at Canadian high schools) in a challenging curriculum. A 3.0 minimum grade point average at St. Lawrence keeps the award. St. Lawrence states that international students, including those from Canada, are eligible for the same merit scholarships as U.S. students.

Eligible Countries

Only students at designated North Country (northern New York State) and Canadian high schools can be nominated. St. Lawrence publishes the list of designated schools, so check whether yours appears before planning around this award.
