This is the top of five bands. Winthrop's own page has a truncated typo in the alternative grade figure for this tier, so treat the 4.0 route as the reliable one.

Two things to hold on to. The waiver, not the cash, is the larger half, and it moves with your credit load rather than being fixed. And the university requires international applicants to submit an SAT or ACT, so the test-optional route its domestic applicants enjoy is closed here.

$6,000 a year in cash plus a waiver of the out-of-state portion of tuition, which the university values together at $80,160 across four years. The out-of-state waiver cannot exceed the out-of-state portion of tuition, $468 a credit hour in 2026 to 2027, and changes as credits are added or dropped. The university has not yet published its 2027 to 2028 figures, which it says arrive in late autumn 2026; the annual cash values have held steady across the last two cycles.

Eligibility

Entry as a first-time first-year student typically with a grade average of 4.0 , or a slightly lower average with an SAT of 1340 or an ACT of 29. The university states international applicants must have completed the SAT or ACT, so the test-optional route open to domestic applicants is not available to them. Renewable for up to three further years on satisfactory academic progress and full-time enrolment of at least 12 credit hours. Competency-based education students are not eligible, and the university may cancel an award where tuition is covered from another source.

The university states it offers academic and talent scholarships to qualified domestic and international students, defines international students as F-1 and J-1 visa holders, and notes that all tuition and fees for them are assessed at the out-of-state rate, which is the table used here. Applicants are evaluated automatically during admission.

No separate application. Awards are made by the admissions office during admission. Applications for spring 2027 entry close on 1 December 2026, and autumn entry has historically closed on 1 February.
