The Horizon Academic Essay Prize is a free annual essay competition open to high school students worldwide. Each year, Horizon Academic selects an overarching theme and presents five prompts for students to choose from. For 2026, the theme was "The Pursuit of Progress," exploring how humanity advances scientifically, socially, and ethically. Essays must not exceed 1,000 words (excluding footnotes and bibliography) and must follow MLA 8th edition citation style with a blind-review format (no identifying information within the essay).
Awards include the Grand Visionary ($1,000 cash and a $6,450 scholarship to the Horizon Academic Research Program), Grand Innovator ($500 cash and a $4,000 scholarship), and Grand Excellence ($250 cash and a $3,000 scholarship), along with Gold, Silver, Bronze, and up to ten Honorary Mention distinctions with partial scholarships. Submissions are judged by a double-blind panel of the Horizon Academic Advisory Board, including professors from Yale, Georgia Tech, and other universities, assessed on originality, depth of analysis, use of evidence, structure, and language precision.
