About the Program

Math Kangaroo (officially the Math Kangaroo International Competition in Mathematics) is an annual multiple-choice mathematics competition held each March for students in grades 1–12 across all 50 US states and territories. It is part of the global Kangourou sans Frontières network, which runs the competition in 90+ countries; students outside the US participate through their national chapter.

The competition is divided into 8 difficulty levels corresponding to grade pairs (1–2, 3–4, 5–6, 7–8, 9–10, 11–12 for the upper grades). Problems emphasize logical reasoning and creative problem-solving rather than rote computation. Students may participate in-person at a registered Math Kangaroo center or online. Results include national and state rankings, with award ceremonies held each May.

Registration for the 2027 competition opens in September 2026. The competition itself takes place in March 2027.

Eligibility

Open to students in grades 1–12 enrolled in schools across the US. Students register through a Math Kangaroo center or online. Each grade level competes in a separate difficulty level (Levels 1–2 through 11–12). Grades 1–12.

How to Apply

Register online at mathkangaroo.org. Registration for the 2027 competition opens September 2026. Choose to participate in-person at a local Math Kangaroo center or online. The competition takes place annually in March.
