The Online Physics Olympiad (OPhO) is a free annual team-based physics competition open to high school students and undergraduates worldwide. Since its founding in 2020 during COVID-19 (originally inspired by Physics Brawl Online), more than 5,000 students from over 50 countries have participated.
Teams of up to three members compete across two rounds. The open round presents numerical problems spanning mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, relativity, waves, and more, with difficulty scaling from accessible to highly challenging — teams work over the course of several days. The top 5-10% of teams advance to the invitational round, a shorter, more intensive contest. Prizes include $1,000+ in cash for the top teams in the invitational round, plus subscriptions to Wolfram Alpha Notebook Edition, PhysOlymp premium memberships, and additional sponsor prizes.
The competition runs annually in summer. Check opho.physoly.tech for the current cycle's registration form and dates.
