About the Program

Take Action Lab is a semester-length gap year program offered by Tilting Futures, placing students for 16 weeks in either Cape Town, South Africa (Civic Innovation track) or Penang Island, Malaysia (Environment & Sustainability track). Students work alongside local practitioners through apprenticeships with partner organizations, supported by a research-backed curriculum and trained supervisors.

Before departing, all students complete an online Foundations Course. On-site, students receive private furnished housing, utilities, a debit card stipend covering groceries and transportation, and 24/7 support from a local team. Academic credit of up to 12 credits through the University of Pittsburgh is available for the Cape Town program.

Tilting Futures offers need-based financial aid, with a stated commitment to equity and diverse economic representation. Aid applications open during Step 2 of the admissions process.
