About the Scholarship

Knight-Hennessy funds the student, not the degree. Up to 100 scholars a year across all seven Stanford schools, with no quotas by discipline, programme or world region, and no restrictions on age, previous university, field of study or career aspiration. Citizens and residents of all countries are invited.

It also asks for no endorsement. Many awards at this level require a university or government to nominate; this one does not.

Funding covers up to three years: tuition and associated fees paid directly, a living stipend spanning room and board, books, supplies, local transport and personal expenses, and a travel stipend for one economy return trip a year. New scholars get a one-time relocation stipend, and second- and third-year scholars can apply for academic enrichment funds.

How those three years land depends on the degree. Six academic quarters for most master's degrees, nine for the JD, up to 11 for the MD, and up to 12 including three summers for a PhD or DMA. Where a programme runs longer, the department's own standard funding takes over from year four, which varies by school.

The structural point most applicants miss is that this is two applications. Knight-Hennessy runs separately from and concurrently with the Stanford graduate application, and both have to succeed. An offer from one does not carry the other.

The eligibility window on the bachelor's degree is the quiet filter. For the 2027 cohort the first degree must have been earned in January 2020 or later, extended to January 2018 for military service. Within that window, how recent the degree is makes no difference.

Several Stanford programmes are excluded: the Honors Cooperative Program, the Master of Liberal Arts, the JSD and MLS, and an MA or MS added by a PhD student in their own discipline. Coterminal degrees are out too, unless the student applies externally to a new full-time degree.

Stipends are taxable and the programme does not reimburse tax, which for an international student from a country without a US tax treaty means withholding as well.

The funding and eligibility pages were checked on 22 September 2026. Stanford publishes no dollar figure for the stipend, so none is given here. The 2027 cohort application closes on 6 October 2026 at 1:00 pm Pacific.

What It Covers

  • Fees
  • Living stipend
  • Travel
  • Other

Funding runs for up to three years of graduate study at Stanford: a fellowship applied directly to tuition and associated fees, a stipend for living and academic expenses covering room and board, books, academic supplies, instructional materials, local transport and reasonable personal expenses, and a travel stipend for one annual economy-class trip to and from Stanford. New scholars also receive a one-time relocation stipend towards moving costs or technology, and scholars in their second and third years may apply for supplemental academic enrichment funds such as conference travel. How the three years map onto a degree varies: up to six academic quarters for an MA, MBA, MFA, MPP, MS, JSM, MLS or LLM; nine for a JD or JD/MBA; up to 11 for an MD; and up to 12, nine academic quarters plus three summers, for a PhD, DMA or MSTP. Where a programme runs longer than three years the department picks up its standard funding commitment from year four. Fellowship stipends are taxable and the programme does not reimburse tax.

Eligibility

Two baseline requirements, stated for the 2027 cohort. First, apply to, be accepted by and enrol in a full-time Stanford graduate degree programme, which may be a DMA, JD, MA, MBA, MD, MFA, MPP, MS or PhD among others. One of four conditions must hold: applying separately but concurrently to Knight-Hennessy and a Stanford graduate programme starting the same year; holding a deferred Stanford admission and applying to start both the same year; being a current Stanford graduate student adding a new full-time programme starting the same year as Knight-Hennessy; or being a first-year Stanford PhD student applying to start Knight-Hennessy in the second year of PhD enrolment. The Honors Cooperative Program, the Master of Liberal Arts, the JSD and MLS, an MA or MS added by a current Stanford PhD student in their own PhD discipline, and coterminal degrees are all ineligible, though a coterminal student who applies externally to a new full-time degree qualifies. Second, the first bachelor's degree, a US bachelor's or its equivalent from an institution of recognised standing, must have been earned in January 2020 or later for the 2027 cohort; applicants who served in the military get a two-year extension to January 2018. Current undergraduates qualify if they will earn the degree by September 2027. There are no restrictions by age, college or university, field of study or career aspiration, no institutional endorsement is required, and no quotas apply by discipline, programme or world region. Recency of the degree within the window carries no preference.

Eligible Countries

Citizens and residents of all countries are encouraged to apply; there are no quotas by world region.

How to Apply

Knight-Hennessy is a separate application from the Stanford graduate programme, submitted alongside it rather than through it, and admission to both is required. Shortlisted candidates take part in a finalist experience before selection.
