About the Scholarship

Ten of these exist in any year, and nobody applies for one. The University of Tokyo picks recipients out of the PEAK admission screening and tells them when it tells them they are admitted, so the admission application carries the entire case.

What it covers is the whole cost of being there: the admission fee, tuition, and 126,000 yen a month to live on, across four years.

Two conditions shape how it is held. It is reviewed annually against academic performance rather than granted outright for the four years, and it assumes four consecutive years of study, so an interruption puts it at risk. Recipients also cannot, in principle, hold another scholarship alongside it, which matters for anyone weighing a home-country government award at the same time.

PEAK itself is the route in. The programmes are English-taught undergraduate degrees at Komaba, built for students educated outside Japan, and this award sets no nationality restriction of its own on top of that.

Worth knowing what sits beside it on the same page, since a student gets one offer rather than a choice: up to five PEAK admits are instead offered the Japanese Government MEXT scholarship, which pays 120,000 yen a month and adds a round-trip flight.

What It Covers

  • Tuition
  • Living stipend
  • Fees

Covers the admission fee, tuition, and living expenses of 126,000 yen a month, for four years. Up to ten students are offered it. The award is reviewed every year and renewal depends on satisfactory academic performance, and it requires in principle four consecutive years of study. Holders may not, in principle, hold any other scholarship at the same time.

Eligibility

Win admission to a PEAK undergraduate programme and be judged of exceptional merit in the admission screening, since that screening is what selects scholarship recipients. The award assumes four consecutive years of study and is reviewed annually against academic performance, so it has to be held rather than simply won. Recipients may not in principle hold another scholarship alongside it.

Eligible Countries

Open to students admitted to the University of Tokyo's PEAK programmes, which are English-taught undergraduate degrees at Komaba aimed at students educated outside Japan. The page sets no nationality restriction on this award.

How to Apply

There is no separate scholarship application. Every scholarship on the PEAK programme is offered when successful applicants are notified of their admission, and recipients are chosen through the admission screening itself, so the admission application is the whole of the case a candidate can make.
