About the Scholarship

This is DAAD's general master's scholarship, funded by the German Federal Foreign Office and open to every academic discipline. It pays €992 a month for between 10 and 24 months, matched to the standard length of the chosen programme.

The one thing it does not pay is tuition, which DAAD states plainly. What it does cover around the stipend is unusually thorough: insurance, a travel allowance on application, €460 a year as a study allowance, and a rent subsidy, family allowance or disability-related subsidy that can be applied for once funding has started.

Language support is a programme in itself. An online German course after the award letter, a two, four or six month course in Germany before the degree where DAAD judges it necessary, an allowance for a self-chosen course during the scholarship, and reimbursement of the TestDaF or DSH fee. Where the degree is taught in German, taking a course is not optional.

Eligibility turns on country. DAAD publishes the list of countries whose graduates may apply here, and it is not worldwide: graduates of developing and emerging economies are directed to the separate EPOS programme. Anyone whose country is not on the list cannot apply to this programme at all.

Three restrictions decide most of the remaining cases. A master's already started in Germany cannot be funded. Funding is only for programmes beginning in the winter semester of the following year. And artistic disciplines and architecture, including urban design, have their own DAAD programmes rather than this one.

Selection weighs preparation as heavily as grades. The committee looks at the choice of degree programme and host university, at contacts already made, and at how the stay fits the academic path, alongside motivation, prospects and extracurricular commitment.

Deadlines depend on where the applicant is applying from, so the country selector on the programme page is the only reliable source for the date.

The programme page was checked on 16 September 2026, when it covered funding beginning in 2027.

Scholarship payments of €992 a month, an annual study allowance of €460, payments towards health, accident and personal liability insurance, and a travel allowance on application. Language support runs alongside it: course fees for an online German course after the award letter, a two, four or six month German course in Germany before the study visit where DAAD agrees it is needed, an allowance for a self-chosen German course during the scholarship, and reimbursement of the TestDaF or DSH test fee. A monthly rent subsidy, a family allowance, a disability or chronic illness subsidy and a Green Mobility Top Up can be applied for after funding starts. DAAD states that it does not cover tuition fees.

Eligibility

Hold a completed first degree, such as a Bachelor's or Diplom, by the time the funding period begins. The programme funds a whole postgraduate or master's degree at a state or state-recognised German university, or one year in Germany as part of a second or master's degree taken at the home university, in which case the credits earned in Germany must be recognised at home and the standard period of study there must not be exceeded. A master's degree already begun in Germany cannot be funded, and funding is only available for degree programmes starting in the winter semester of the following year. Applicants in artistic disciplines and in architecture, including urban design, apply through DAAD's separate programmes for architecture, fine art, design and film, performing art and music. Participation in a language course is compulsory where the study programme is taught in German.

Eligible Countries

DAAD lists the countries whose graduates may apply to this programme; applicants from developing and emerging economies are directed to the separate EPOS programme instead.

How to Apply

Applications go through the DAAD portal. An independent selection committee of specialist academics assesses academic qualification, the quality and preparation of the study project, and the applicant's potential. Preparation is weighed explicitly: the choice of degree programme and host university, the contacts already established, and how the project fits the academic path. Motivation, prospects and extracurricular or social commitment all count, and the committee also considers equal opportunity factors declared on the form. After the first year of a two-year award, academic achievements are reviewed before funding continues.
