Named for the Nobel laureate and Furman alumnus Charles H. Townes, this award pays $36,000 a year for four years and is reserved for students living outside South Carolina, which includes applicants from abroad.
Furman says in writing that international students are eligible for all of its institutional merit-based scholarships, so the only restriction here is that you are not a South Carolina resident. Selection comes straight from the admission file, and a campus interview is sometimes requested for premier awards.
At roughly two thirds of Furman tuition it leaves a gap, and room, board and fees sit on top of that. International students cannot fill the gap with Furman need-based grants, so have family funding or outside awards lined up.
Apply by the 1 November priority deadline to be in the premier scholarship pool. Recipients also get Public Leadership Seminars with government and civic leaders and a place in the Community of Scholars.
