The money is comprehensive: all subsidised tuition after the MOE Tuition Grant, 5,800 Singapore dollars a year to live on, 5,000 a year toward accommodation and 1,750 once for a computer, held for the normal length of the degree.
The obligation attached to it is the thing to understand before applying. The scholarship itself carries no bond, but recipients are required to take up the MOE Tuition Grant, and that grant does: non-citizens who take it must work for a Singapore-registered company for three years immediately after graduating. Dentistry students serve five years with the Singapore Ministry of Health and Medicine students six. A student who does not intend to stay in Singapore after graduation is agreeing to something substantial here.
Nothing is applied for separately. Every eligible admission applicant is considered, shortlisted candidates are emailed, interviews run from January through July and outcomes land by mid-July. The admission application is the whole of the case.
Renewal is assessed every semester rather than annually, against a GPA of at least 3.5, or top 80 per cent of cohort in Dentistry, Law and Medicine. Leaving early can mean repaying everything received.
Two eligibility details that decide cases: transfer applicants from other universities, local or overseas, cannot be considered at all, and holders cannot hold another scholarship, bursary or allowance alongside this one without the University's prior approval.
NUS also states it may decline to award the scholarship at all in a year where no candidate reaches sufficient merit, and that the committee's decision is final.
