The Joan B. Johnson Scholarship supports Spelman students heading into science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Selection as a Joan B. Johnson Scholar carries $25,000 towards your direct costs, beginning with your first semester and running across the next four academic years.
Direct costs means the charges Spelman bills you, so the money lands on your student account rather than in your pocket. Ask the Office of Admissions to confirm how the $25,000 is spread across the four years before you build your budget on it.
There is no separate application. Apply for admission, make your STEM interest visible in your courses and activities, and the Office of Admissions does the rest.
Spelman is the leading producer of Black women who go on to complete doctorates in STEM fields, which is the context this award sits in.
