About the Scholarship

The Student of Distinction Scholarship is the smallest of Spelman's named admission awards, worth up to $10,000 of your direct costs across the next four academic years.

It recognises intellectual curiosity, service, leadership and academic excellence, which is the same evidence the admissions committee already reads in your file.

For an international student it works best as one piece of a larger plan. Spelman offers international students merit scholarships only, with no need-based aid, and every F-1 applicant documents the remaining cost before an I-20 is issued.

No separate application exists. Apply for admission, and any award appears in your SpelCheck portal with your acceptance letter.

Other

Up to $10,000 of the student's direct costs (the charges billed by the College) for the next four academic years, beginning with the first semester. Everything else stays with the student.

Eligibility

Spelman describes itself as a historically Black liberal arts college for women, so it admits women. The award recognises intellectual curiosity, community service, leadership and academic excellence, alongside a commitment to service to humanity. International students (anyone who is not a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, plus anyone attending high school abroad) are eligible, because Spelman states that merit-based scholarships are the only form of aid available to its international students and that every admitted student is automatically considered for all merit-based scholarships available to first-year students.
