About the Scholarship

The #WhyUS Scholarship pays between $2,000 and $10,000 a year at Temple, held for up to four consecutive years by first-year students and up to two years by transfer students. It stacks on top of other Temple awards you have already been offered.

This one rewards creativity rather than grades. Temple says winners are chosen independently of academic performance. You respond to a prompt about why studying in the United States appeals to you, in whichever format suits you: a 250-word essay, a one-minute video, an audio piece, a photo collage, a meme, a drawing or a painting.

Eligibility is straightforward. You must be a first-year or transfer international student who has applied to Temple or is about to. Apply through the Common Application, then submit the separate #WhyUS form by 1 March. Winners hear by 1 April.

There is a string attached. Winners agree to serve as #WhyUS ambassadors and give up to 10 hours a semester to International Student Affairs activities, and Temple may republish what you submit.
