Lester B. Pearson International Scholarship

About the Scholarship

The Pearson is a full ride in the literal sense: tuition, books, incidental fees and residence, for four years. Around 37 are awarded a year.

The part that decides most outcomes happens before the student writes anything. A school nominates, and it may nominate one student per year, so the first competition is inside your own school and the university never sees candidates who do not clear it. That nomination closes on 9 October 2026 for September 2027 entry.

Two more deadlines follow in quick succession: the University of Toronto admission application by 16 October, then the scholarship application itself by 6 November. Missing the nomination makes the later two irrelevant, which is why the order matters more here than the final date.

Eligibility is defined by study permit rather than by passport. Anyone who needs a permit to study in Canada can be considered, while Canadian citizens and permanent residents cannot. Candidates must be in their final year of senior secondary school in 2026/2027 or have graduated no earlier than June 2026.

One rule to take literally: the university disqualifies candidates who use generative AI to compose the scholarship application.

The scholarship page was checked on 16 September 2026.

What It Covers

  • Tuition
  • Housing
  • Books & materials
  • Fees

Covers tuition, books, incidental fees and full residence support for four years of a first-entry undergraduate programme. Around 37 scholarships are awarded each year, backed by more than 12 million dollars of funding in 2024.

Eligibility

Be nominated by your secondary school, which may put forward one student a year. Be in your final year of senior secondary school in 2026/2027, or have graduated no earlier than June 2026, and be starting at the University of Toronto in September 2027 on a first-entry undergraduate programme. Applicants must require a study permit to study in Canada. Using generative AI to compose any part of the scholarship application disqualifies the candidate from the award.

Eligible Countries

International students who require a study permit to study in Canada, which excludes Canadian citizens and permanent residents. Nationality is otherwise unrestricted, but a school nomination is required and each school may nominate only one student per year.

How to Apply

Three steps in a fixed order, each with its own deadline. The school submits the nomination first, from 6 July to 9 October 2026. The student then applies to the University of Toronto for admission by 16 October 2026, and finally completes the scholarship application itself by 6 November 2026. A student cannot enter the competition without the nomination, so the school's step is the real gate.
