Hello! I’m Ahmed Essam from Cairo, Egypt. I graduated from STEM High School for Boys - 6th of October in 2022, and I’m currently a junior at Wagner College. This is the story of my journey!
My Background
I had my sights set on STEM High School for Boys - 6th of October while still in middle school. After completing Grade 9 and meeting all the school's requirements, I spent the summer studying for the entrance exam and was accepted. During the first two weeks, we had a summer camp where we met older classmates and seniors. They gave us valuable advice on how to maximize our chances for university admissions.
When I Decided to Study Abroad
My older brother attended the same school and studied abroad, so from day one, I knew I wanted to do the same. I focused heavily on academics and extracurriculars to prepare myself for this goal.
Why I Chose the U.S. as My Destination
Initially, I considered Germany, but the requirement of 13,000 Euros in a private bank account made it less accessible. The U.S. quickly became a better option for me due to its accessible financial aid services and high-quality education, which were my two main priorities.
Wagner College Admission and the Trustees' Scholarship
Wagner College wasn’t my first choice - I applied for Early Decision 1 (ED1) to Connecticut College but wasn’t accepted. Wagner College was an Early Action application, and I was targeting the Trustees' Scholarship, a full-tuition, room, and board scholarship awarded to one international student per year.
Wagner waits until the end of the admission cycle to choose the scholarship recipient, so I decided to apply Early Action. In December 2021, I was accepted to Wagner, but I had to wait until April for the scholarship decision. In the end, I was thrilled to receive the Trustees' Scholarship!

During the summer of Grade 10, I interned as a web development tutor at an online academy. I also worked on several websites as a developer and built a web development portfolio to strengthen my College application. In addition, I was the president of the German Club at school and a member of the EducationUSA'sCompetitive Club College (CCC).
Helpful Resources
Two resources that were particularly helpful in my application process were Competitive Club College (CCC) and Crimson Education Scholars. CCC is a club provided by Education USA that helps students apply to U.S. universities. Crimson Education Scholars offers a scholarship for 50 international students and provides mentors to assist with personal statement revisions, listing activities, and financial aid discussions.
Life at Wagner
While Wagner College mostly consists of American students, there is a decent number of international students as well. The campus is beautiful, and the advisors are incredibly helpful in guiding us to choose the right courses. A major advantage of attending a small-sized college like Wagner is the close relationships you can form with your professors. At the beginning of my sophomore year, I founded Google Developer Student Clubs on my campus. Google Developer Student Club was an enriching experience in which I grew on both personal and professional levels. Yet, what I’m really happy about this experience is that I tried to help my community as much as possible by starting a new initiative in which all of the technology-knowledge seekers and lovers felt welcomed and valued. During the summer after my sophomore, I was doing the Career Activator program, a development program in which I am learning more about professional life and enhancing my leadership and personal skills. Additionally, I’m working at Staten Island FerryHawks (a baseball team in Staten Island, NY) as a Data Analysis intern.
