My Background

Hello, I am Tomoko, an undergrad student at Stanford!

I was born in Kumamoto, Japan, but grew up in Tokyo, where I attended an IB high school. This globally focused education fueled my desire to experience a broader perspective and interact with diverse cultures. Studying abroad offers incredible opportunities to explore new ideas, make global connections, and grow academically and personally.

Why the USA?

The United States is known for its cutting-edge research opportunities, particularly in energy and sustainability—fields that align with my interests. I also considered studying in the UK and Canada but ultimately chose the U.S. due to its academic flexibility and vibrant extracurricular landscape. The ability to change my major easily and pursue multiple disciplines was a significant factor in my decision.

Why Stanford?

Stanford’s interdisciplinary approach, strong emphasis on innovation, and extensive resources in clean energy and sustainability made it the perfect fit for me. Additionally, I was drawn to the community of curious and driven individuals, the beautiful campus, and the welcoming atmosphere with a very sunny climate!

I applied to several universities in the U.S., including UC Berkeley, UC San Diego, UC Davis, the University of Michigan, and Virginia Tech. Since I applied early to Stanford, all my other acceptances were from public universities. In total, it costs approximately $90 to apply per school.

How did I prepare for the Application?

I intensified my extracurricular involvement in the last two high school years and started working on my college applications during summer break. I created a structured timeline for important dates that helped me stay organized. Feedback from teachers and friends, the book 50 Successful Stanford Application Essays, and the Benesse Study Abroad Center were all very helpful in crafting my application. (The Benesse Study Abroad Center is a branch of Benesse that guides Japanese students to study abroad.)

Scholarship and Tuition Fees

I received the Yanai Tadashi (UNIQLO) Foundation Scholarship, which covers tuition, room, board, insurance, and some living expenses. The Yanai Tadashi Foundation is a prestigious scholarship program supporting Japanese students who demonstrate strong academic potential and leadership qualities. It aims to empower students to study at top global institutions and contribute to society. The application process was separate from my university applications and required demonstrating academic excellence, leadership experience, and a clear vision for the future, and how I will contribute.

The scholarship covers most of my living expenses, but I fund my travel and personal purchases through part-time work.

My Japanese has also helped me at Stanford, and I’ve even met with Prime Minister Kishida (he was still in office during that time) during his visit!

My Major and Academic Life

I am majoring in Chemical Engineering with a minor in Energy Science and Engineering. The curriculum is rigorous but incredibly fulfilling, offering numerous hands-on project opportunities. I enjoy unique classes like learning chemistry through cooking experiments.

Life at Stanford

My first week was overwhelming yet exciting. Meeting so many people was initially intimidating, but the orientation programs and university support helped me adapt quickly and smoothly.

Building friendships was easier than I expected. Joining clubs, attending dorm events, and being open to new conversations helped me connect with others. I recommend participating in campus activities and engaging with peers in classes and dorms. I actively participate in clubs like the Stanford Energy Club, Stanford Japan Exchange Conference, and Stanford Social Entrepreneurial Students Association. I also enjoy running around campus, working out at the gym, and exploring restaurants in Palo Alto.

The academic workload is challenging, but effective time management is key. I balance my studies, extracurriculars, research, work, exercise, and social life by setting clear priorities and using a planner.

Looking towards the future…

After graduation, I plan to apply to graduate school and pursue a career in the clean energy sector, contributing to global sustainability initiatives.
