Indigo Research Program: From Egypt to Global Impact Through Research, Innovation & Mentorship

My name is Yassin Bassem, and I’m a senior high school student from Egypt with a strong passion for research and innovation. My journey has been full of exciting opportunities and challenges that helped me grow. One of the most life-changing experiences for me was being selected as one of only 16 students from around the world to join the Indigo Intensive Research Program. I received a full scholarship worth about $4000, and this opportunity not only strengthened my research skills but also inspired me to help others by sharing what I learned.

Diving into Research with World-Class Mentors

At Indigo, I was lucky to work with Dr. Steve Bullock, an Associate Professor at the University of Bristol. Together, we worked on a research paper about continuous glucose monitoring systems. This study focused on how to make diabetes care better and more accessible for people in underserved areas.

The program was both challenging and rewarding. I got to work with talented students from different parts of the world, and I learned so much about teamwork, persistence, and how research can solve big problems. Indigo wasn’t just about research—it was about building connections, thinking creatively, and finding ways to make a real impact.

Expanding My Horizons - Giving Back Through Mentorship

Indigo was just one chapter in my journey. Earlier, I joined the Lumiere Research Scholar Program, where I was 1 of 200 students selected globally and received full financial aid of ~$3000 to work with a PhD graduate from the University of Connecticut. These experiences solidified my passion for biomedical engineering and the research itself, which fueled my desire to make a difference in the world. After that, I founded Beacon Scholars, a free 12-week research program for high school students around the world. I recruit talented and PhD research mentors who I believe can create life-changing experiences for students, providing them with advice sessions throughout the program. We received about 900+ applicants from all over the world for the first cohort, and we only accepted 110 students. I conducted 10+ sessions and mentored 32+ students individually. I’ve shared my journey and advice through mentorship sessions, guiding aspiring researchers in STEM fields. Giving back to the community has been a deeply fulfilling aspect of my journey. Click here

Creating a Guidebook for Future Scholars

The Indigo program was more than just research—it was a transformative experience that I wanted to share with others. I wrote a comprehensive guidebook to help other students apply for and get accepted into the program.  This guide breaks down the application process, offers tips on crafting a standout application, and provides insight into maximizing the research experience. I wanted to ensure that talented students worldwide have access to opportunities like Indigo, regardless of their backgrounds. You can find the Guide Book - here

Entrepreneurship and Community Impact

DonorConnect: Revolutionizing Blood Donation

While volunteering at a local blood drive, I noticed how many people wanted to help but didn’t know how. It hit me that I could create something to inspire young people to donate blood. This was the start of DonorConnect making blood donation fun and engaging through:

  • An app and website to simplify blood donor registration and facilitate the donation process.

  • A game designed to engage younger audiences in the importance of blood donation.

I Co-founded DonorConnect with my friend Mazen. DonorConnect underwent a successful trial at Tanta Regional Blood Bank, where it analyzed 10 donors and was endorsed by Dr. Amal Safouh, the bank’s head manager. It placed in the top 8% at ISEF over 1100+ projects! Also, 3rd in Tech-innovation Competition, national competition by AASTMT University in Egypt. I was so proud. This recognition felt like a victory for everyone who believed in our project. In addition, We received $1000 from an Egyptian businessman to help develop it. DonorConnect is now being reviewed by the Ministry of Health in Egypt for a national launch across all blood banks. This could make us the first app recognized by the ministry in this field, and I can’t believe how far we’ve come!

The Power of Biology and Technology: Inspiring the Next Generation

I authored The Power of Biology and Technology book to help children explore science and technology in a fun and simple way. The book follows Alex, Mia, and their friends on 11 exciting adventures, diving into topics such as the human body, coding, medical inventions, genetics, and environmental preservation.

Each chapter teaches a unique lesson about teamwork, problem-solving, and compassion. The impact has been profound:

  • Over 200 children have read the book.

  • 87% of surveyed readers said it increased their interest in science and the field of Biomedical Engineering.

  • 30 students were inspired to start their own STEM projects.

This book demonstrates how Biology and Technology can work hand in hand, inspiring kids to dream big and make a real difference.

Creative Ventures and Personal Growth

Beyond academics, I am a graphic designer and social media manager, generating over $30,000 in design projects and social media management; working with a national company  boosts net profits by over $100,000.

I also organized national neuroscience events under the International Youth Neuroscience Association, showcasing my ability to lead and inspire in diverse fields. I am the Vice president - International Youth Neuroscience Association (IYNA Gharbiya Chapter) which Ranked first globally last season on all IYNA chapters. I Led 5+ educational seminars (26h+) designed to simplify neuroscience fundamentals for middle and high school students; Reached to 2500+ views. Initiated the International Synapse Contest (ISC); formulated 40+ neuroscience questions and gathered 1500+ participants from 44 countries.
