University application deadlines in the US, Canada, the UK, Germany, the Netherlands, Australia and Japan

Students learn the American application calendar from the internet and assume the rest of the world runs on it. It does not. Most countries open and close once a year, several months earlier than people expect, and missing the window costs you twelve months rather than a few weeks.

So we checked the calendar in seven countries against the body that sets it, starting with the United States. Dates below are for the cycle that is open now, and we have said which cycle each one belongs to.

The UK deadline for Oxford, Cambridge and medicine closes in ten days.

United States: every university sets its own dates

There is no national deadline in the United States. Each university publishes its own, and almost every selective one publishes two: an early deadline in November and a regular deadline in January.

Harvard sets Restrictive Early Action at 1 November, with notification by mid-December, and Regular Decision at 1 January, with notification by the end of March. Admitted students have until early May to reply, and Harvard states that no deposit is required.

MIT sets Early Action at 1 November and Regular Action at 4 January, notifying in mid-December and mid-March.

MIT's page carries the detail that matters most to anyone applying for aid: financial aid applications "are managed separately from admissions applications, and are due November 30 for EA applicants and February 15 for RA applicants". The aid deadline is a separate date from the admission deadline, and for an early applicant it falls a month after the application.

Across the Common Data Set filings we hold for 242 universities, regular closing dates cluster on 1 January, 15 January and 1 February, with 30 November also common, and 112 of those universities publish an Early Action closing date while 115 publish an Early Decision one. Those are filings rather than live pages, so take your date from the university.

The consequence for an international applicant is that a US list contains two deadlines and an aid deadline, and the November one decides where the money goes.

Canada: the early round closes on 7 November

Canada has no single national application. Ontario runs one through the Ontario Universities' Application Centre, other provinces run their own, and many universities set their own international dates on top.

The University of Toronto's 2027-28 undergraduate admissions bulletin sets out the shape. Applications open on the OUAC website in late September 2026, and the bulletin tells applicants to submit by 7 November 2026 "to be considered in the earliest rounds of admission". The final application deadline is 15 January 2027.

Documents run on their own clock. For most programme areas the document deadline is 1 February, and applicants who applied by the early consideration date are told to submit what they have by 1 December.

One detail is worth knowing if you miss the January date: after the final deadline, programmes that are not full "may consider applicants on a rolling basis". That is not a deadline extension, but it is not a closed door either.

Housing is a separate deadline again. Toronto asks for the residence application by 31 March 2027, "even if you haven't received an admission decision yet".

A student who became a Pearson Scholar at Toronto after US and UK visa bans and a student from Kazakhstan who went to UBC on a full ride took two different provinces through this.

United Kingdom: 15 October for Oxford, Cambridge and medicine

The UK runs a single cycle through UCAS and gives you five choices in total, across every university you apply to.

For 2027 entry, UCAS opened applications on 12 May 2026 and began accepting completed applications on 1 September 2026. Then come two deadlines, both at 18:00 UK time.

15 October 2026 is the equal consideration date "for applications to the universities of Oxford and Cambridge, and for most courses in medicine, dentistry, and veterinary medicine/science". That is ten days from today.

13 January 2027 is the equal consideration date "for applications for most undergraduate courses".

After that the cycle keeps running, with progressively worse odds. Extra opens on 25 February 2027 for applicants who have used all five choices and hold no offers. Applications received by 30 June 2027 still go to universities, and after that time they are "automatically entered into Clearing", which opens on 2 July. The final date for 2027 entry is 23 September 2027.

The thing to plan around is the reference. UCAS will not let you send the application without one, so the person writing it needs the October date in their diary, not just you.

A student from Lahore who reached the London School of Economics describes using all five choices and being admitted to four of them.

Germany: submit eight weeks before the deadline

Germany is the country where the deadline on the calendar is not the date you should be working to.

uni-assist, which evaluates international applications for 180 German universities, states that the deadline "is often July 15th if the course starts in the winter semester" and "often January 15th if the course starts in the summer semester". Two intakes a year is more than almost anywhere else on this list.

Then comes the part students miss. uni-assist evaluates your certificates before your application reaches the university, and that takes time. Its own recommendation is to "apply as early as possible, at least 8 weeks before the deadline expires". Evaluation usually takes four to six weeks, and the current published times by region of your certificates, as of 28 September 2026, are three to four weeks for Central and Eastern Europe and Turkey, four to five weeks for Asia, North America and Oceania, three to four weeks for Western Europe and Latin America, and two to three weeks for Africa, the Middle East and Iran.

Two exceptions are worth checking before you plan around 15 July. Many universities set earlier deadlines for specific courses, particularly master's courses and the Studienkolleg. And if your university requires a preliminary review documentation, the VPD, you have to submit that to the university yourself before its deadline, which means the uni-assist evaluation has to be finished well before the date you were aiming at.

A student from Romania studying in Bremen and one from Kazakhstan at the Technical University of Munich both went through this route.

Netherlands: 15 January or 1 May, depending on the course

The Dutch system has one platform, Studielink, and two different deadlines, and which one applies to you depends on the programme rather than on you.

Study in NL gives both: 15 January for a numerus fixus programme, and 1 May for all other study programmes. Numerus fixus means the programme has a cap on places and selects among applicants, and that deadline is hard, "before 15 January 23:59 hours (CET)".

The numerus fixus route then has its own calendar after the deadline. Results come on 15 April, and an accepted candidate has to accept the place through Studielink within two weeks.

Both dates are general. The page says to "always check the exact deadline with the institution of your choice, as it may vary per institution and study programme".

Anita, who chose Leiden, picked it partly for the shorter three-year programme and the lower tuition.

Australia: February or July, in a year that runs the other way round

Australia is the one country here whose academic year is inverted relative to the northern hemisphere, which catches out students planning a gap year.

Study Australia states that "Australia's academic year starts in February or March and ends in November", and that "you can apply to start your studies in Semester 1 (February or March) or Semester 2 (July)".

The mid-year option is the useful part for anyone who missed a northern deadline, and it has its own window: "applications for mid-year enrolment usually open around April each year, in time to begin studies in July".

Deadlines are set by each university rather than nationally, so the date comes from the institution.

Japan: the published schedule starts a year ahead

Japan's calendar is the longest on this list, because the visa documentation sits inside it.

The official Study in Japan timeline for students entering a Japanese language institute sets out start months of April, July, October or January, and works backwards from there: request materials from institutes 10 months to a year before the course starts, choose a school by seven months before, apply five to seven months before, and expect the admission acceptance letter three months before.

Only after that letter do you begin immigration procedures, receiving a Certificate of Eligibility for a Status of Residence and then applying for the visa itself.

Starting a year ahead is not caution here. It is the published schedule.

One student applied for the MEXT scholarship through a university's joint office rather than through an embassy, and a student from India went to Japan through the Asia Kakehashi Project before university.

What this means if you are applying to more than one country

Lay the dates side by side and the conflicts appear immediately.

A student applying to Oxford and to German universities for the winter semester is working to 15 October 2026 and 15 July 2027, nine months apart, for courses starting within weeks of each other. Add the US and Canada and two more dates land in early November. Add a Dutch numerus fixus programme and 15 January 2027 appears, the same day Toronto closes. A student who misses all of those can still start in Australia in July.

Three rules fall out of the calendar itself.

Work backwards from the earliest deadline on your list. That is rarely the university you care about most. In the UK it is 15 October for two universities and three subject areas, and in the US it is the November early deadline.

Count the processing time as part of the deadline. Germany tells you to submit eight weeks early because a third party evaluates your certificates first. A document that arrives on the deadline has not met it.

Know how many chances a year the country gives you. Germany gives two. Australia gives two. The UK gives one, with five choices inside it. Japan's language route gives four start months and wants a year of preparation. Canada gives one, with an earlier round inside it that improves your odds.

Start your own journey

Write the deadlines down before you write anything else, and put the reference writer's name next to each one, because in the UK your application cannot be sent without it.

Then check every date on the body's own page. UCAS, uni-assist, Studielink, Study Australia and Study in Japan all publish theirs, they update them each cycle, and they are the only version that counts.
