About the Scholarship

The Emerging Global Leader Scholarship covers all billable expenses at American University for two incoming international first-year students each year. Around $4,000 a year of non-billable costs such as health insurance, books and airfare remain the student's responsibility.

It is genuinely international-only. US citizens, permanent residents and dual citizens are excluded; applicants must require an F-1 or J-1 visa.

A partial tier worth up to $40,000 a year also exists. Applying takes both the Common Application and a dedicated scholarship application by 15 January, with awards announced by 1 April.

Country eligibility is subject to the provider's published requirements, checked on 12 September 2026.
