About the Scholarship

Around 70 scholarships a year, roughly two thirds of them to PhD students. About a third of the awards go to the US round and the rest to the international round, which means the two rounds are not the same competition and an applicant does not choose between them: citizenship and current residence decide which one they are in.

Full cost means what it says. The University Composition Fee, a maintenance allowance of £23,152 for twelve months at the 2026-27 rate, an economy flight at each end of the course, and inbound visa costs including the Immigration Health Surcharge. PhD funding runs up to four years.

The discretionary layer is where this pulls ahead of most awards. Academic development funding of £750 to £4,000 for conferences and courses, a Dependent Children Allowance reaching £18,244 a year for two or more children, maintenance kept during PhD fieldwork, up to six months of maintenance across a maternity or paternity intermission, and hardship funding for the unforeseen. There is no partner allowance, and bench fees and scientific equipment sit with the academic department rather than the Trust.

Other funding cuts both ways. A fee award from a public authority such as UKRI must be accepted, after which the Trust may share or withhold the fee and maintenance. A salary or another substantial scholarship can reduce the maintenance allowance, and the Trust asks to be told as soon as any is awarded.

The course list is the first filter and it excludes more than most people expect. PhDs, the MLitt and one-year postgraduate courses qualify. Undergraduate degrees, MASt courses, part-time degrees other than the PhD, and the professional degrees, MBA, EMBA, MFin, Executive Master of Accounting, BusD, PGCE, MBBChir, MD and A101 among them, do not.

A course already begun cannot be funded for its remainder. Someone part way through a PhD is out; someone finishing an MPhil and applying for a PhD is in.

The application is one form for admission and funding together, with four Gates-specific questions of 200 to 300 words each mapped directly to the selection criteria. Those questions and a separate Gates Cambridge reference are what separate candidates after departments have nominated them, so they carry the weight rather than the admission materials.

The reference asks the referee to rate the applicant as exceptional, strong, not strong or weak, and to name the group that ranking is drawn from. It needs someone who knows how competitive the programme is.

Offers must be accepted within 72 hours.

The scholarship, eligibility and timeline pages were checked on 22 September 2026, when applications for 2027/8 entry were open.

What It Covers

  • Living stipend
  • Travel
  • Fees

The University Composition Fee at the appropriate rate, a maintenance allowance for a single student set at £23,152 for 12 months at the 2026-27 rate and pro rata for shorter courses, one economy single airfare at the start and end of the course, and inbound visa costs including the Immigration Health Surcharge. PhD scholars are funded for up to four years. Discretionary funding can be applied for on top: academic development funding of £750 to £4,000 depending on course length, a Dependent Children Allowance of up to £12,793 a year for one child and up to £18,244 for two or more, maintenance while on PhD fieldwork, up to six months of maintenance during a maternity or paternity intermission, and hardship funding. No funding is provided for a partner, and bench fees and scientific equipment are not covered.

Eligibility

Be a citizen of any country outside the United Kingdom, applying for a PhD full-time or part-time, a full-time MLitt, or a full-time one-year postgraduate course at Cambridge. Selection rests on four criteria: outstanding intellectual ability, reasons for the choice of course, a commitment to improving the lives of others, and leadership potential. A current Cambridge student may apply for a new course, and a current Gates Cambridge Scholar may apply for a second scholarship for a new degree, but a course already under way cannot be funded for its remainder. All current Cambridge students are considered in the international round. Excluded courses are undergraduate degrees including a second BA, MASt courses, part-time degrees other than the PhD, and professional or non-standard degrees: the MBA, EMBA and Global EMBA, MFin, Executive Master of Accounting, BusD, PGCE, MBBChir Clinical Studies, the MD, the Graduate Course in Medicine (A101) and the Master of Conservation of Easel Painting. Where a scholar wins a fee award from a public authority such as UKRI they must accept it, and the Trust may then share or withhold the fee and maintenance. A salary or another substantial scholarship can reduce the maintenance allowance.

How to Apply

One combined form covers admission and funding, submitted through the University's Graduate Application Portal. Complete the admission section for a course and a College place, then the Gates Cambridge sub-section of the funding section. That sub-section asks four questions mapped to the selection criteria: how education and past experience show academic excellence (around 200 words), why this specific course at Cambridge and how it fits future plans (around 200 words), an example of a commitment to improving the lives of others and why it matters (around 300 words), and an example of leadership and the impact it will enable (around 300 words). PhD applicants must submit a research proposal. On top of the two academic references for admission, a separate Gates Cambridge reference is required, in which the referee rates the applicant as exceptional, strong, not strong or weak and says what group that ranking is drawn from. Departments nominate candidates before panels review them, and an offer must be accepted within 72 hours.
