One hundred and forty thousand Canadian dollars, paid 17,500 a term across eight terms, is the international stream of SFU's entrance scholarship competition. The five other awards on the same page, ranging from 20,000 to 60,000 dollars, are for Canadians and permanent residents only.
SFU never says what the money is for. It publishes the figure and the instalment schedule and leaves coverage unstated, which is worth knowing when weighing it against a tuition bill. One detail suggests the base award is not meant to carry living costs: the extra 8,000 dollars per term living allowance is a separate offer, made in limited cases to exceptionally talented students with demonstrated financial need.
The academic bar is concrete rather than vague. Ninety per cent average, or 31 IB points excluding bonus points, in the courses required for the chosen programme. An applicant who is not admissible to that programme is out of the competition regardless of the rest of the file.
Two deadlines matter and they are seven weeks apart. The application closes on 15 December, but references and the admission To Do List run until 31 January. Applying on time and then losing the award to an unreturned reference is the failure mode worth guarding against, because the referees are contacted by SFU only after submission.
The application rewards preparation over polish: five extracurricular activities with reflections, a 500-word essay on how personal experience shaped an outlook, and an optional section for financial circumstances.
One quiet efficiency for business applicants. A Beedie applicant whose USES application meets the minimum requirements does not file the Supplemental Application for admission separately, because the USES application is read in its place.
