About the Scholarship

Southern Illinois University Carbondale charges international undergraduates a non-resident tuition rate. The High Achievers Alternate Tuition Rate replaces it with the Illinois in-state rate for students who clear an academic bar, and assigns the resident budget, which also lowers the financial statement you must show for your visa.

The bar is reachable. An ACT composite of 26, an SAT total of 1240 across Evidence-Based Reading and Writing and Mathematics, or a secondary school GPA of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale each qualify an incoming first-year student, and being offered SIU's Academic Scholarship for First Year students does too. Transfer students qualify with a 3.0 transfer GPA across at least 26 transfer semester hours.

SIU has run the programme since 2013 and kept it for international undergraduates after domestic out-of-state students moved onto in-state tuition automatically in 2017. It is sometimes called Out-of-State Scholars. The rate holds for undergraduate study and stops if you continue into a graduate or professional degree at SIU.

There is nothing extra to fill in. Apply for admission, then make sure official test scores arrive from ACT or SAT directly, using codes 1144 and 1726, and that transfer transcripts arrive in sealed envelopes within thirty days of issue. Paperwork that turns up late is the usual way students lose the rate.

What It Covers

  • Tuition

Sets tuition at 1.0 times the current in-state undergraduate rate in place of the international non-resident rate, and assigns the resident budget. Living costs, fees and travel stay with the student.

Eligibility

For incoming international first-year students, SIU asks for an ACT composite of 26 or higher, or an SAT total of 1240 or higher on Evidence-Based Reading and Writing plus Mathematics from one sitting, or an overall secondary school GPA of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale. An offer of the Academic Scholarship for First Year students also qualifies. Incoming international transfer students need an overall transfer GPA of at least 3.0 across 26 or more transfer semester hours. The rate applies to undergraduate study, and it ends if the student goes on to a graduate or professional degree at SIU. It cannot be combined with another alternate tuition rate, such as the Legacy rate. SIU also refers to the programme as Out-of-State Scholars.

How to Apply

There is no separate scholarship application. Apply for undergraduate admission and make sure the qualifying evidence reaches SIU. Official ACT or SAT scores must come directly from the testing organisation, using school code 1144 for ACT and 1726 for SAT. Transfer applicants must send current official sealed transcripts from every institution attended to the office of Articulation and Evaluation, issued within the previous thirty days. Late or missing documents can cost you the rate. Once admission is confirmed, the International Students and Scholars office follows up on documents.
