About the Scholarship

The Walentas Scholarship is the Jefferson Scholars Foundation's award for first-generation students, and it pays the same amount as the Jefferson Scholarship: the entire cost of attendance at the University of Virginia for four years, over $83,000 a year for a student from outside Virginia.

You qualify as first-generation if neither parent nor guardian has earned a bachelor's degree or its international equivalent. A parent part-way through a degree still counts, and an older sibling with a degree does not disqualify you.

Citizenship is not a requirement, so an international student can hold this award. The restriction is geographic: only schools inside the United States hold Walentas nomination slots, which makes this a route for international students at US secondary schools. If your school is outside the United States, your counsellor can nominate you for the Jefferson Scholarship instead.

The process mirrors the Jefferson competition and runs on the same 1 December nomination deadline, with its own regional committees, its own interview rounds and a final selection in late February. Walentas Scholars also attend a Scholar Summit before first year and receive the same enrichment funding.

Eligibility

For students in their final year at a secondary school located in the United States who will be the first, or among the first, in their family to earn a bachelor's degree. A student qualifies if neither parent nor guardian holds a bachelor's degree or its international equivalent. The Foundation states that Walentas Scholars do not have to be US citizens. Selection rests on leadership, scholarship and engaged citizenship. Financial need is not considered, and SAT, ACT, AP and IB scores are excluded for the 2026-2027 cycle. Recipients must gain admission to the University of Virginia.

Eligible Countries

Citizenship is not required, and the Foundation states that Walentas Scholars do not have to be US citizens. Nominations for this award come only from schools located inside the United States, so the route is open to international students attending a US secondary school. Students at schools outside the United States can be nominated for the Jefferson Scholarship instead.

How to Apply

Nomination only, through your school counsellor, using the portal that opens in August. Counsellors submit a scholastic report, one reference letter, a transcript and a school profile; you submit activities, awards and two essays. A separate regional committee reviews the Walentas pool, runs interviews from mid-December to January, and a separate committee interviews finalists in late February. You apply to UVA separately.
