About the Scholarship

The Joan B. Johnson Scholarship supports Spelman students heading into science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Selection as a Joan B. Johnson Scholar carries $25,000 towards your direct costs, beginning with your first semester and running across the next four academic years.

Direct costs means the charges Spelman bills you, so the money lands on your student account rather than in your pocket. Ask the Office of Admissions to confirm how the $25,000 is spread across the four years before you build your budget on it.

There is no separate application. Apply for admission, make your STEM interest visible in your courses and activities, and the Office of Admissions does the rest.

Spelman is the leading producer of Black women who go on to complete doctorates in STEM fields, which is the context this award sits in.

$25,000 applied to the student's direct costs (the charges billed by the College) for the next four academic years, beginning with the first semester. Travel, books, insurance and personal spending stay with the student.

Eligibility

Spelman describes itself as a historically Black liberal arts college for women, so it admits women. The award asks for academic distinction and an interest in a STEM discipline. International students (anyone who is not a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, plus anyone attending high school abroad) are eligible, because Spelman states that merit-based scholarships are the only form of aid available to its international students and that every admitted student is automatically considered for all merit-based scholarships available to first-year students.
