About the Scholarship

Texas Tech's International Affairs office runs a small undergraduate scholarship for students born outside the United States. The cash figure is modest, up to US$1,000 for the academic year, paid towards tuition and fees first with any remainder handed to the student. The part worth reading twice is the second half of the award: it is expected to waive out-of-state tuition for the year, which at a public Texas university is worth far more than the headline amount.

Eligibility is written unusually widely. Texas Tech asks only that you are a full-time undergraduate born outside the United States, regardless of citizenship, residency or national origin, and that you can demonstrate financial need. Entering students and transfers are judged on their curriculum, test scores and class ranking. Students already on campus need a 3.0 GPA and 15 earned credit hours each semester.

You apply online through the International Affairs portal and arrange two letters of recommendation. The application is incomplete until both letters land, and the portal has known trouble delivering requests to Gmail addresses, so give your recommenders somewhere else to receive them. The deadline falls in late March for the following academic year.

One practical warning from Texas Tech itself: scholarships administered by International Affairs cannot be used as proof of financial support for your I-20. Plan your visa paperwork on money you already hold.

What It Covers

  • Tuition
  • Fees

The money pays tuition and fees first, and any balance is released to the student by Student Business Services. The award is also expected to waive out-of-state tuition for the award year, which is where most of its value sits. Housing, food and travel sit outside the award.

Eligibility

Open to full-time undergraduates born outside the United States, regardless of citizenship, residency or national origin, who have demonstrable financial need. Entering and transfer applicants are assessed on curriculum, test scores and class ranking. Students already at Texas Tech need at least a 3.0 GPA and 15 earned credit hours per semester. The award runs for one academic year and may be renewed if academic achievement and financial need continue. No service to the university is required.

How to Apply

Apply online through the Texas Tech International Affairs scholarship portal and submit two letters of recommendation, which must arrive for the application to count as complete. Recommenders should use a non-Gmail address, because the portal sometimes fails to deliver requests to Gmail. Texas Tech sets a late March deadline each year, so check the current date on the International Affairs scholarships page in the autumn before you apply.
