UBC runs four international awards as a single competition, and the useful thing to know is that a student does not choose between them. One application goes in, and the university states that its team automatically considers you for every award you qualify for.
The four are aimed at quite different circumstances. The Karen McKellin International Leader of Tomorrow Award looks for academic achievement and leadership. The Donald A. Wehrung International Student Award is for students from impoverished or war-torn areas who could not attend university otherwise. The International Impact Award rewards leadership in sustainability, climate change, social justice or health, with priority to first generation learners. The Vantage One Excellence Award is for students who fall short of the English Language Admission Standard for direct entry, which turns a barrier into a funded route.
All four require demonstrated financial need on top of their own criteria, so this is not a competition that can be won on grades alone.
Amounts are the weak point in the published information. The only figure UBC gives is that awards range up to the full cost of an academic programme and living expenses, and that sentence sits with the Vantage One award rather than the programme as a whole. Treat the ceiling as real and the individual amount as unknown until offered.
Dates for September 2027 entry: applications open in early October 2026 and close on 15 November, with supporting documents following by 31 January 2027. Interviews run January to March, and decisions arrive in early to mid April.
The programme page was checked on 16 September 2026.
