The University of Maine at Farmington awards a limited number of merit scholarships worth $11,000 a year to incoming international first-year students, paid as $5,500 a semester and running up to four years for a total of $44,000.
Two conditions attach to keeping it: the student must maintain F-1 visa status and must live on campus. The university is also direct that the award reduces tuition rather than covering the full cost, and that students meet the remainder themselves.
Selection weighs academic achievement alongside non-athletic talents and geographic origin. Canadian students are handled separately and can receive merit awards at the in-state level.
