About the Scholarship

The Good Neighbor Scholarship uses the February–March application window for fall and the academic year.

The exemption applies to tuition alone. Health insurance, late registration charges, the ISSS support services fee and the rest of your bill are still yours to pay, and so are housing, food and travel. Awards are made one year at a time, so a recipient applies again for any later year.

Applications run through LASSO, the university scholarship system, in two windows each year. Searching the keyword ISSS brings up the Texas Global awards. You will need certified evidence of native-born citizenship, your academic record, and answers about your expected costs.

What It Covers

  • Tuition

An exemption covering one year of tuition across the autumn, spring and summer terms. Fees and other charges on the tuition bill, such as health insurance, late registration and the ISSS support services fee, stay with the student, as do living costs.

Eligibility

You must have been born in and be a resident of a nation in the Western Hemisphere other than the United States, and you must document that citizenship with certified evidence. UT Austin also asks for scholastic qualifications. Awards are one-time, so a recipient is not guaranteed the exemption in later years. Cuba is ineligible by statute, as are the hemisphere's dependent territories.

Eligible Countries

Open to native-born citizens and residents of a nation of the Western Hemisphere other than the United States. Applicants must furnish certified evidence of native-born citizenship along with their scholastic qualifications. Cuba is ineligible by statute, as are the dependent territories of other nations in the hemisphere.
