Mexican students at UT Austin can apply for TAMS, a waiver of the non-resident share of the tuition bill. Because the non-resident rate sits well above the Texas resident rate, the waiver is worth more than most cash scholarships the university offers international students.
The award is credited against tuition, so no money reaches your bank account. You remain responsible for the resident portion of tuition, for fees, and for housing, food and travel. Financial need is part of the test, and the number of awards each semester is small, so the process is competitive.
Applications go through LASSO, the university scholarship system, where the keyword ISSS lists the awards Texas Global administers. There are two windows a year, one in February for the autumn term and academic year, one in October for the spring and summer terms.
