Hi everyone, my name is Aibike, and I’m a student from Kyrgyzstan with ambitious goals!

My journey to study abroad has been filled with challenges, but it has also been an incredible opportunity to grow, learn, and embrace new experiences. As someone who has been a top-tier athlete, a ballroom dance champion, and a passionate entrepreneur, my path to Minerva University was shaped by determination, resilience, and a deep desire to achieve something bigger than myself.

Background: A Strong Foundation

I graduated from a public school in Kyrgyzstan, widely regarded as one of the top schools in the region, even though it didn’t offer international programs like IB or A-Levels. The rigorous academic environment helped me develop a strong foundation for my education, but it wasn’t just about grades for me. I was involved in various extracurricular activities, from sports to ballroom dancing, and I found ways to balance both.

I started ballroom dancing when I was six years old and have continued to compete professionally ever since. I’ve been a member of the Kyrgyzstan National Sports Team and have won Asian championships and multiple international competitions. In addition to my athletic pursuits, I co-founded a startup that secured $4,000 in funding and reached over 10 countries. I’m also deeply passionate about social causes and founded a non-profit organization to support elderly and retired people recovering from trauma.

The Decision to Study Abroad

When I was younger, I didn’t think studying abroad was an option due to the high costs associated with it. However, everything changed in ninth grade when I learned that students from Kyrgyzstan were receiving full scholarships to study at U.S. and European universities. This was the turning point that made me realize studying abroad could be a reality for me, too.

Despite my initial hesitation about the costs, I later discovered scholarships that covered not only tuition but also living expenses. This gave me the confidence to pursue my dream of studying abroad, and I started looking for universities that would support my academic and personal growth.

Why Minerva University?

When it came time to choose a university, I decided on the United States due to its globally recognized education system. What truly stood out to me about Minerva University was its unique global model. Minerva’s curriculum allows students to study in seven different cities over the course of their degree, which provides a truly immersive experience in different cultural and educational environments. Starting my studies in San Francisco, with its tech-driven atmosphere and proximity to Silicon Valley, was especially appealing to me as I was interested in exploring the world of technology and innovation.

Although I had also been offered a full-ride scholarship to study in Turkey, I ultimately chose Minerva for the opportunity to experience different cultures and educational systems. I believe that studying in a variety of countries will help me develop a global perspective and enhance my ability to adapt to diverse environments.

Overcoming Obstacles: The College Application Process

The application process for Minerva was not easy, and it took me three years to prepare. Along with improving my English and math skills, I worked hard to enhance my writing and personal growth. But my journey wasn’t without challenges. I faced a back injury just two weeks before an international sports competition, and doctors advised me to stop dancing. Despite this, I continued to train, driven by my passion for dancing, which became the central theme of my college essay. I wrote about the perseverance it took to overcome my injury and how it taught me the importance of fighting for what I love, no matter the obstacles.

I also relied on a variety of resources during the application process, including Telegram channels, webinars, and the support of mentors who helped me with my personal statement. One story that really shaped my perspective on accomplishments was about a person from Egypt who considered coloring his wall an achievement. It made me realize that accomplishments don’t have to be traditional or standard; they can be deeply personal and meaningful. This inspired how I framed my own achievements in my application.

Scholarships and Financial Aid

I was fortunate to receive a full-ride scholarship to Minerva University, which covers my tuition, housing, and some insurance costs. However, I will need to pay for transportation and tickets to the different countries where I will study. The scholarship application required additional documentation, including tax forms, bank statements, and the CSS Profile, which is typical for need-based scholarships in the U.S.

Balancing Academics, Dance, and Life

Managing academics and extracurricular activities, especially ballroom dancing, during the application process was challenging but not impossible.

Since first grade, I’ve been juggling studies and dance, often practicing daily, even on holidays and birthdays. This routine has instilled a sense of discipline in me that has been crucial throughout my life, especially during the application process. Although it wasn’t always easy, it became second nature, and I’ve learned to prioritize what matters most.

A Vision for the Future

At Minerva, I’m most excited about the community I’ll be a part of, the global travel opportunities, and the chance to immerse myself in different educational systems. I’m particularly looking forward to studying in seven different cities, as it will allow me to interact with people from various cultural backgrounds and learn firsthand about the educational systems in different parts of the world. I believe this experience will be invaluable for my future, helping me develop into a global citizen.

In addition to academics, I’m excited about gaining practical experience through internships, especially in Silicon Valley, where I hope to work on projects that will help me achieve my long-term goals.

Conclusion

My journey from Kyrgyzstan to Minerva University has been filled with perseverance, passion, and a deep commitment to following my dreams. I am excited for the opportunity to study in seven cities across the globe, to grow as an individual, and to gain the skills and experiences that will help me succeed in the future. Minerva’s global education model offers an incredible chance to learn from diverse perspectives and cultures, and I can’t wait to begin this next chapter in my life.

Minerva University is where I will continue my studies for a four-year degree in Global Studies, immersing myself in a truly unique and dynamic educational experience.
