Supplemental Essays

The University of Utah Honors College is distinguished by its small interactive and interdisciplinary classes, one-on-one attention from exceptional faculty, and opportunities to do a research or creative capstone (thesis) in your major. Students earn the Honors Bachelors, the highest undergraduate degree conferred by the University, through completing a combination of honors coursework and a thesis in their major. All first-year honors students live in honors housing, including the Katharine B. Garff Honors Tower at Kahlert Village, and receive a merit scholarship. Our community celebrates excellence and encourages students to put their talents to work on behalf of the collective good.
Essay Prompts:
If you would like to apply to the Honors College, you are required to respond to one of the following prompts. The Honors College expects that all responses submitted through the Common Application are conceived of and written by the applicants themselves.
Please respond to only one of the following prompts (500 words or less):
1. Intellectual Traditions courses in the Honors College help prepare students to make informed decisions about complex, interdisciplinary problems. Each course explores big or universal questions that transcend historical bounds. You are tasked with creating a new Intellectual Traditions course. Please name your course and describe the topics and questions it would cover.
2. The Honors Thesis is an independent research or creative project in your major completed with the mentorship of a professor. Describe what motivates you to pursue this opportunity, and why you would like to have the chance to do an Honors Thesis.
