About the Program

The European Girls' Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO) is an annual international mathematics competition exclusively for female high school students, first held in 2012. Despite its name, it is open to countries worldwide — 60+ nations participate, including many outside Europe. The competition rotates host countries each year; EGMO 2027 will be held April 11–17 in Šibenik, Croatia.

The format mirrors the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO): contestants sit two 4.5-hour exams on consecutive days, each featuring three proof-based problems across number theory, algebra, combinatorics, and geometry. Medals are awarded to approximately half of all participants, with additional recognition for exceptional problem-solving. The competition also serves as a key pathway for strengthening female representation on national IMO teams.

Participation is by invitation only. Each country nominates up to 4 contestants and up to 2 observer students through its national mathematical olympiad organization. Students who wish to participate should focus on excelling in their national olympiad and contact their country's team leader or mathematical society.

Eligibility

Open to female high school students worldwide. Participation is by invitation only — students must be nominated by their national mathematics olympiad organization. Each country may nominate up to 4 contestants and up to 2 observer students.
