About the Scholarship

STRIDE pays $22,500 a year for four years at Smith College, plus $3,000 a year for the first two attached to a research assistantship with a faculty mentor. That is $96,000 in total, and it is awarded regardless of financial need.

The research position is the point as much as the money: about seven hours a week working alongside a faculty member from the first year, which is unusual for an undergraduate anywhere.

Two things to be clear about. Smith is a women's college and admits applicants who self-identify as women, including cis, trans and nonbinary women. And on eligibility, Smith marks its US-citizens-only merit awards with an explicit sentence, applies that marker to three of its five, and withholds it here, while running the merit section on its financial aid page for international students. No sentence names international students and this award together, so that convention is the basis.

What It Covers

  • Tuition
  • Other

$22,500 a year, capped at $11,250 a semester, for each of four undergraduate years, awarded regardless of financial need. A further $3,000 a year for the first two years comes with a research assistant position of about seven hours a week alongside a faculty mentor. The total four-year value is $96,000, against tuition of $70,460.

Eligibility

Entry as a first-year student with outstanding academic and personal qualifications; about 50 are awarded a year. Continuation each year needs good academic standing, with no grade threshold published. Smith is a women's college and considers for admission any applicant who self-identifies as a woman, including cis, trans and nonbinary women. International students who do not apply for aid before admission are never eligible for institutional aid at the college, so the aid application must go in with the admission application.

Eligible Countries

Smith marks each merit award that is restricted to American citizens with the sentence that it is available to US citizens, and applies that marker to three of its five merit awards but not to this one. The merit aid block naming this award is also served on the college's financial aid page for international students, which uses it in a worked example. The college states no sentence naming international students and this award together, so eligibility rests on that convention and placement.
