About the Scholarship

The Academic Scholarship is Spelman's award for students who have built a record of academic excellence. It pays one-half of tuition for four academic years, starting with your first semester.

Half of tuition is a serious discount and still leaves fees, housing, meals and travel to cover. For an international student that gap has to be funded from family resources or outside scholarships, because Spelman offers its international students merit scholarships only.

The effort asked of you is low. Applying for admission puts you in the pool automatically, and the Office of Admissions reads your grades, your test scores if you sent them, your service and your leadership. Decisions arrive with your acceptance in the SpelCheck portal.

Spelman is a historically Black liberal arts college for women in Atlanta, and the merit pool is competitive, with a limited number of awards each year.

What It Covers

Tuition

One-half of tuition for four academic years, beginning with the first semester. Fees, housing, meals, health insurance, travel and books stay with the student.

Eligibility

Spelman describes itself as a historically Black liberal arts college for women, so it admits women. International students (anyone who is not a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, plus anyone attending high school abroad) are eligible, because Spelman states that merit-based scholarships are the only form of aid available to its international students and that every admitted student is automatically considered for all merit-based scholarships available to first-year students. Selection rests on grade point average, standardised test scores where submitted, community service and leadership. International applicants must also show they can meet the costs the scholarship leaves behind.
